US Soccer Team Beat Spain Football Team

Why did I write two different world, soccer and football? Yes, because it is the same. US Soccer team made a surprised when they beat Spain in the Confederation Club in Egypt. They beat Spin two goals to none.

Well, you can say that they were lucky. Remember when they got beat by Italy 3-0? Although in the end Italy was beat by Brazil, I still think that Italy should be the champ.

Now, the final match is between US vs Brazil or other team.

Finally, the U.S. men’s national team’s long-standing advertising slogan titled “Don’t Tread On Me” can be worn proudly – and accurately.

After all too often curling up into a ball and pleading for mercy against world powers, Bob Bradley’s team threw off its shackles on Wednesday night to deliver one of the greatest results in U.S. soccer history.

Written off going into the Confederations Cup and ridiculed after blowout losses in their first two games, somehow Bradley’s players found the will and the way to defeat Spain 2-0 on Wednesday and clinch a place in Sunday’s championship game of South Africa’s 2010 World Cup warmup event.

Somewhere in that wondrous and diverse land, this collection of players from clubs all around Europe and North America found a common understanding. Out of the ashes of a 3-0 defeat to Brazil that resembled champions against children came the most improbable of revivals. Last Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Egypt sparked some confidence, but even that improved performance gave little indication of what was to come.

Virtually the same group of players was dreadful against Brazil and outclassed by Italy. The tactics were not drastically different, either. But the mindset was a world apart. From the outset, the U.S. proved to Spain that it would not be bowed, even against a team ranked the best on the planet. The Americans attacked hard and early and set some seeds of doubt into the minds of an opponent that could have been forgiven for expecting an easy ride.

JAKARTA -- Kabar baik bagi Soebandrio, Oemar Dhani, dan RS. Soetarto. Tiga
narapidana politik (napol) itu 15 Agustus 1995 ini dapat berkumpul dengan
keluarganya dan bebas menghirup udara 50 Tahun Indonesia Merdeka. Ini
setelah Presiden Soeharto memberikan grasi.
Pemberian grasi itu, kemarin (27/7) diumumkan Mensesneg Moerdiono di
Jakarta. Menurut Mensesneg, Presiden Soeharto telah mempertimbangan secara
matang pemberian grasi tersebut. Pertimbangan mencakup segi hukum, politik,
dan kemanusiaan. ''Sama sekali tidak ada tekanan dari luar, ''tegas
Moerdiono.


Moerdiono kemudian memerinci tiga pertimbangan tersebut. Dari segi politik,
tiga napol itu telah menunjukkan perubahan sikap dan tindakan. Dari segi
hukum, ketiganya bukan tokoh PKI. Pengadilan ketika itu, kata Mensesneg,
menghukum mereka karena memberikan kesempatan kepada orang lain untuk
menggulingkan pemerintah yang sah.
Dari segi kemanusiaan, Presiden mempertimbangkan bahwa ketiganya sudah
berusia lanjut dan tindakan mereka juga sudah berubah. Bahkan, kata
Moerdiono, ada yang secara fisik sudah sakit-sakitan karena usianya yang
sangat lanjut.
Dr. Haji Soebandrio, 81 tahun, ketika meletusnya G-30-S/PKI, menjabat
sebagai Wakil Perdana Menteri I, Menlu, dan kepala Biro Pusat Intelijen. Ia
dianggap turut memberi kesempatan kudeta berdarah yang gagal pada 30
September 1965. Pengadilan, ketika itu dipimpin Ali Said, menjatuhkan
hukuman mati kepadanya.
Oemar Dhani, 71 tahun, juga divonis mati. Ketika G-30-S/PKI, Oemar menjabat
Menteri/Panglima Angkatan Udara. Laksamana Madya Udara ini, pada 2 Oktober
1965, membuat pernyataan bahwa Angkatan Udara tak ikut campur dalam
G-30-S/PKI, tak ikut campur urusan angkatan lain, dan tak tahu menahu
mengenai ''Dewan Revolusi Indonesia.'' Sehari sebelumnya, dari markas
G-30-S/PKI di Halim Perdanakusuma ia mengancam akan membom markas Kostrad di
Jl. Merdeka Timur.
Raden Soegeng Soetarto, 77 tahun -- yang juga divonis mati -- ketika itu
menjabat sebagai Kepala BPI dengan pangkat brigjen (Pol). Seperti Soebandrio
dan Oemar Dhani, Soetarto juga dinyatakan bersalah memberikan kesempatan
pihak lain untuk menggulingkan pemerintah yang sah. Ketiganya pada 1980-an
meminta grasi, dan hukuman mati diubah menjadi seumur hidup.
Setelah hampir 30 tahun mendekam di LP Cipinang, ketiga isteri napol ini
mengajukan lagi grasi kepada Presiden. Isteri Soebandrio mengajukan grasi,
pada 23 Agustus 1994. Isteri Oemar Dhani justru sempat mengajukan tiga kali,
yaitu 7 April 1994, 25 Agustus 1994, dan 12 Oktober 1994. Isteri Soetarto
mengajukan dua kali, yaitu 24 Mei 1993 dan 13 Juni 1994.
Berdasarkan pengajuan grasi itu, pada 2 Juni 1995, Presiden dengan hak
prerogatifnya memberikan grasi dengan Keppres No. 16 A/B/1995 untuk
Soebandrio, Keppres No. 16 B/B/1995 untuk Oemar Dhani, dan Keppres No. 16
C/B/1995 untuk Soetarto.
Ihwal pengajuan grasi yang bukan langsung dari ketiga napol, menurut
Moerdiono, tidak melanggar undang-undang. ''Sepanjang pengajuan itu
disetujui ketiga napol, ya tidak melanggar undang-undang,'' kata Moerdiono
dengan menegaskan bahwa Presiden telah mempertimbangnya secara matang.
Moediono menyatakan tak tahu persis mengapa permohonan grasi tidak langsung
dilakukan terpidana sendiri. ''Yang jelas, permohonan itu telah sesuai
prosedur hukum yang berlaku,'' kata Mensesneg seraya menambahkan, beberapa
bulan lalu, Ny Soebandrio dan Ny Omar Dhani menemuinya untuk membicarakan
permohonan grasi ini.
Presiden, kata Moerdiono, memberi instruksi kepadanya untuk menuntun dan
memandu mereka, agar permohonan grasi dapat diajukan menurut prosedur hukum.
Mereka kemudian dibantu pejabat staf di kantor Sekertariat Negara.
Grasi, menurut Moerdiono, pada dasarnya adalah pengampunan terhadap hukuman
yang telah diputuskan oleh pengadilan. Pemberian grasi dapat berupa
keringanan terhadap hukuman yang telah dijatuhkan, bisa berupa pengurangan,
perubahan, atau pembebasan hukuman.
Dengan pengertian tadi, kata Mensesneg, yang menjadi obyek grasi adalah
hukuman yang diputuskan oleh pengadilan. Dengan kata lain, yang dipersoalkan
oleh grasi adalah hukumannya, bukan kesalahannya. ''Jadi, kalau pun
hukumannya dikurangi, diubah atau bahkan ditiadakan, tidak berarti
kesalahan yang sudah terbukti, hilang atau terhapus,'' ujar Moerdiono.
Pengumuman pemberian grasi itu di Setneg, kemarin, juga dihadiri Ny.
Soebandrio, putranya Yoga, Ny. Oemar Dhani, dan Ny. RS Soetarto. Seusai
Moerdiono memberikan keterangan pers, mereka yang berada di ruangan
tertutup, tak sanggup menahan tangis haru. Moerdiono pun tampak sangat
terharu dan menitikkan air mata.
Keluarnya grasi kepada tiga napol itu, semakin memperpanjang daftar nama
yang telah mendapatkan grasi dari hukuman mati ke seumur hidup. Mereka
antara lain Maliki bin H.Yusuf mendapat grasi tahun 1980, R.Sumbodo (1980),
Sudono (1980), Ach.D.Gani (1980), P.Sitepu (1980), Johan Rivai (1980), dan
Yosep P. (1980).
Bagaimana dengan mantan Kolonel A. Latief yang kabarnya telah mengajukan
grasi lima tahun silam? Menjawab pertanyaan ini, Moerdiono tak banyak
komentar kecuali secara diplomatis mengatakan bahwa grasi merupakan hak
prerogatif Presiden.
A. Latief yang kini mendekam di LP Cipinang, ketika terjadinya pemberontakan
G-30-S/PKI, menjabat sebagai Komandan Brigif I Kodam Jaya. Mahkamah Militer
Luar Biasa menyatakan ia terlibat G-30-S/PKI dan dijatuhi hukuman seumur
hidup. Ia duduk sebagai orang inti di dalam Dewan Revolusi yang dibentuk
Letkol Untung yang melakukan kudeta.
Rencana pemberian grasi kepada tiga napol itu, jauh sebelumnya sudah muncul
jadi pembicaraan hangat. Dari pemantauan Republika melalui
pemberitaan, banyak pihak yang menyarankan agar pemberian grasi ini
dilakukan secara hati-hati.
Ketua DPR/MPR Wahono, misalnya, meminta Presiden mempertimbangkan soal ini
matang-matang. Alasannya, ideologi komunis tak pernah mati karena PKI adalah
partai massa dan partai kader. Mantan Wapres Sudharmono juga meminta
pemberian grasi dilakukan hati-hati. ''Tak ada alasan memaafkan PKI, namun
juga tak ada alasan untuk tidak memaafkannya,'' kata Ketua Tim Penasehat
Presiden tentang P-4 itu beberapa waktu lalu.
Pangab Jenderal TNI Feisal Tanjung ketika dengar pendapat dengan DPR,
beberapa waktu lalu, dengan tegas menyatakan ABRI tidak bisa memaafkan PKI.
ABRI menilai komunisme tetap sebagai ancaman.
Dan, dalam keputusan pemberian grasi yang diumumkan kemarin, tak terdapat
nama tokoh PKI, seperti A. Latief. n

Clash with U.S. in Mideast

This is where China's quest for more oil will come directly in

conflict with the concerns of U.S. foreign policy - particularly

in the Middle East.



During the Cold War, China stayed away from the Middle East.

That region's geographic distance and political instability deterred

it from securing ties with its major oil-exporting nations and,

at least until a decade ago, the old China of ox carts and

bicycles did not need to import oil.



But now the Middle East and relations with oil-producing nations

have become key interests in China's foreign policy, perhaps

second only to its obsession with Taiwan.

More cars than U.S. by 2030

It's estimated that China could have nearly 30 million automobiles

by 2010. By 2030, China is expected to have more cars than the

United States and import as much oil as the U.S. does today.



Already, China has overtaken Japan as the world's second biggest

importer of oil, after the United States. And its appetite is

huge and growing. As Daniel Yergin of Cambridge Energy Research

Associates puts it, "China has gone from being a minor player in

world commodity markets, if a player at all, to being the decisive

ynamic factor today. In terms of oil, 40 percent of the entire

growth in oil demand since the year 2000 has been China."



In this quarter alone, China's demand for oil is projected to

increase 21 percent. That follows a 19-percent increase during

the first quarter of this year.



Nor are Chinese consumers, especially those in the growing middle

class produced by a booming technology sector, particularly

interested in fuel-efficient small cars. Gas-guzzling sport

utility vehicles are not simply an American passion. They are

in great demand in China, too.



In a report from China broadcast on National Public Radio in June,

a 35-year-old woman in Beijing, Sia Lan, an executive in China's

expanding advertising industry, said she, like many other of her

friends, prefers to drive SUVs. "I have a sedan car, too, which I

used to drive to work because my Jeep guzzles a lot more gas," she

said. "But I prefer my Jeep because I can see over all the other

cars."



A Chinese environmentalist, Liang Congjie, is distressed by the

implications. "If each Chinese family has two cars like U.S.

families, then the cars needed by China, something like 600

million vehicles, will exceed all the cars in the world

combined."



The prospect is daunting, not only for the effects it would

have on the world's production of greenhouse gases to accelerate

global warming, but also for the incredible pressure it would

put on the world's oil supply.



Just 10 years ago, China was self-sufficient in oil and actually

exported small quantities to other Asian nations. Now, imports

account for more than one- third of Chinese oil consumption.

And rather than relying on foreign oil companies to supply it

with oil, China wants its own oil firms to go directly overseas

to secure supply sources it can exploit itself.
