Before he changed his name, before he confused his adoring public with too few and then too many albums, Prince was a "go to" guy if you wanted a solid hit single.
He managed to write cute and clever while never losing his experimental drive.
He knew how to get weird without losing the commercial thread. He knew how to walk the line. And he never lost his inner weirdness.
But he did lose a good chunk of his audience.
