Lemonade to Avoid Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are solid pieces of material that form in a kidney. They can stay there or they may travel down the urinary tract until they are eliminated naturally. Unfortunately, kidney stones can also get stuck in the ureter, bladder or urethra. The result can be bleeding, blockage of urine flow and excruciating pain. Thankfully, there are natural ways to greatly reduce your risk of having this most common disorder of the urinary tract, including simply drinking lemonade.

New research shows that lemonade is an effective -- and delicious -- way for kidney-stone-prone people to slow the development of new stones.

"When treating patients in our kidney stone center, we put everyone on lemonade therapy," says Steven Y. Nakada, chair and professor of urology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Nakada spoke during a news conference on kidney stone research at this week's annual meeting of the American Urological Association in Atlanta.

Drink more water throughout the day. For people with a history of kidney stones, doctors usually recommend passing about 2.6 quarts (2.5 liters) of urine a day. Your doctor may ask that you measure your urine output to ensure that you're drinking enough water. People who live in hot, dry climates and those who exercise frequently may need to drink even more water to produce enough urine.

Lemons have the highest concentration of citrate - a natural inhibitor of kidney stone formation - of any citrus fruit.

In a recent study conducted by Sur, lemonade therapy - drinking four ounces of reconstituted lemon juice in two litres of water per day - was shown to decrease the rate of stone formation from 1.00 to 0.13 stones per patient.

Other fruit juices have less citrate and are often supplemented with calcium and contain oxalate, one of the principle components of kidney stones.

Fight Colorectal Cancer with These Foods

An increased risk of colon cancer is posed for those who are older than 50, suffer from polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity or type 2 diabetes, or have a family history of colon or rectal cancer. Poor lifestyle choices, such as a diet high in red and processed meats, smoking, inactivity and heavy alcohol use have been linked to colon cancer. Incorporating these powerful foods into your diet will reduce your risk of developing this devastating disease.

Dark-coloured fruits and vegetables may help to protect against colon cancer, research has shown.

Scientists found that the chemicals that give foods such as grapes, radishes, purple carrots and bilberries their colour significantly slow the growth of colon cancer cells.

Evidence from experiments on rats and on human colon cancer cells suggests that anthocyanins, the compounds that colour most red, purple and blue fruits and vegetables, slow the growth of the cells by anything from 50 to 80 per cent.

The findings take scientists a step closer to figuring out what gives fruits and vegetables their cancer-fighting properties.

Broccoli and related foods like kale, cabbage and cauliflower contain indol-3-carbinol, which is protective against breast cancer by turning bad estrogen into healthy estrogen. A substance in these foods called sulforaphane acts as an antioxidant that can deactivate cancer-causing chemicals.

What is it about beans, rice, green veggies, and dried fruit that help with colon cancer prevention? In a word: fiber. And lots of it. Fiber is a known anti-carcinogen. But that's not all, folks. Scientists think there may be something else at play in these foods -- perhaps a perfect storm of various nutrients working together that helps prevent cancer. As if that weren't enough, a high-fiber foods also help steady your blood sugar, control your appetite, and lower your cholesterol.

Lets Try To Increase Your Stamina

Stamina is an elusive creature. Elusive in the fact that you cannot rate it on a scale fron one to ten. How do you know that you don't have enough stamina? You may have enough and not know it. Is the lack of stamina the lack of motivation? If it is, then you may lack motivation. Motivation is the father of stamina. So, let's get you motivated first.

Weightlifting is another good activity. Start slow and stay slow. You don't need to lift great weights. Just make yourself do it. Five or ten pounds with enough repetitions will do wonders. One thing is essential to motivation. You can't be motivated without a good nights sleep. Many of us don't plan for the most important part of living. Great living starts with great sleeping.

You probably have an idea what interval training is. It’s a proven way to increase endurance. Basically, it’s just a combination of sprinting, jogging, and walking. When you do your runs, you do sprints and jogs/walks alternately. You can do them for at least 20 minutes during your run. Even better if you can do it longer. The jogging/walking part is the recovery aspect of the training. Use this time to gather energy for the next sprint.

Try to eat a lot but avoid garbage food like hamburgers and chips. Always chew many times before swallowing the food. This will help you maximize the nutrients you get out of the food. You should try to eat at least 3 big meals per day combined with 3 small. Avoid commercial energy drinks and power bars. Nothing is better than real food, believe me. Try to sleep at least 8 hours because you need to be fit and have lot of energy if you want to increase your stamina levels.

How to Cure Hangover Nausea

One of the worst parts about a hangover is the nausea. It's sometimes impossible to take any remedy, even an aspirin, and hold it down until it can start to work. You probably already know some of the things that help you when you're facing the nausea of a hangover - or nausea for any other reason, for that matter. But take a look at some advice you may not have thought of.

The nausea pros - moms to be - have a hatful of tricks they use to get their days started when nausea is threatening to put their lives on hold. One of those is to eat something very dry and drink something very light. Even our grandmothers said that plain crackers or dry toast was a good thing to eat when nausea was a problem. And they were right!

Start with only a small amount of either, then wash it down with something very light. A weak tea is usually a good idea for a drink - hot if you're feeling chilled or cold if you're feeling flushed and overheated.

What You Need To Know

Water will help rehydrate your body. Drink water during and after alcohol consumption.
Be sure to snack before and/or after drinking.
When possible, sleep in the morning after.

Make a banana milkshake. If you aren't in the mood for solid food for breakfast, drink a banana milkshake to alleviate the symptoms of your hangover, including nausea. In a blender, mix two bananas with five cups of milk. Add honey to sweeten the drink. The bananas will restore your electrolytes and potassium, which are often depleted after heavy drinking. The milk will soothe your stomach and help keep you hydrated. And the honey will help boost your blood sugar levels.

When Can I Eat After My Workout?

The information about not eating after a workout is completely wrong. Every responsible source in bodybuilding and athletics recommends that you eat after training, and preferably within 45 minutes (maybe up to 60) after a workout. This period, known as the golden hour, is when the muscles absorb the most nutrients and when glycogen, an energy reserve in your muscles, is replaced most efficiently. The actual composition of the post-workout meal is a matter of some debate; for optimal glycogen replacement, most people recommend carbohydrates, but a certain amount of protein (at least 10 percent of the meal) is needed for muscle repair and growth.

There is a window of time about 20-60 minutes after you exercise in which your muscles will readily accept the carbohydrates and protein that you consume and suck them up to be stored away as precious energy and building blocks for recovery. But if you wait too long after exercising to eat, your body become less likely to use what you eat as fuel and recovery, and more likely to run out of energy during your next exercise session, whether later in the day or even the next day.

This is why the ideal source of protein to eat after your workout is whey protein powder. Just mix it with some type of liquid (most often water) and you got yourself a drinkable source of protein.

A whey protein shake will be digested by your body much quicker than a solid food for two reasons:

Liquid meals digest faster than solid food meals.
Whey protein is the fastest digesting form of protein there is.

This is what makes whey protein pretty much the official choice of most people as their post workout meal protein source.

In addition to food or a meal replacement shake, you can also take Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA’s) and Glutamine after your workout. BCAA’s are necessary for building skeletal muscle and for energy in muscle cells. Glutamine has been shown to spare lean body mass during stress, improving the immune system, and increasing growth hormone levels.

To Breathe Properly on a Run

When you run, you get out of breath. This is normal. This is natural. Your body runs on oxygen, just as your automobile runs on gasoline. When you start to exercise--whether running, walking or any other physical activity--your muscles need more oxygen. The body meets this need by supplying oxygen-rich blood to the muscles. The lungs work harder to absorb this oxygen out of the air.

Try going through one full breath - inhaling and exhaling - every six to eight steps you take while running. In other words, for the first three to four steps, inhale a little bit on each step until at the third or fourth step, you have a full breath inflating your belly and lungs. Then for the next three to four steps, exhale a bit each time your foot hits the ground until you have exhaled completely.

1. Try slowing down before attempting to change your breathing.
2. Focus on longer, deeper breaths.
3. Breath more from your diaphragm (belly) than your chest (chest breathing is more shallow).
4. Focus on exhaling more fully. This will remove more CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) and 5. allow for deeper inhalations of O2 (Oxygen).
6. Allow air to enter through both the nose and mouth. This will allow for maximum O2 intake.

Fit with PushUps

"Mike, how do I get rid of my Bingo Arms?"

No, it's not by doing a bunch of tricep extensions!

It's by doing the following...

* Step 1: Fix Your Diet!
* Step 2: Work on your pushups!
* Step 3: When you can do 10 pushups then we'll talk...

If you can't do 10 pushups in a row then I don't want to hear you "tried everything and I can't get rid of these Bingo Arms!" A pushup is one of the simplest, most effective exercises to develop strength and musculature in the upper body and arms.

Get fit with 100 pushups

One hundred push ups is all it takes to get super fit and healthy – according to http://hundredpushups.com/.

The site offers a six week training program that promises to increase your strength to the point where you can do 100 consecutive push ups. Sound crazy? It actually seems to work…and if you think that you’ll never do it, why not give it a try and see for yourself? No gym equipment needed, just good old gravity and your own body weight.

Push up

Now then, for those of you who haven’t experienced the pain of a school PE class in some years, here’s a reminder of what a push up is:

The definition of a push up according to Wikipedia, is “a common strength training exercise performed in a prone position, lying horizontal and face down, raising and lowering the body using the arms.”

Push ups are the stock standard training techniques used by armies, kung fu classes and personal trainers around the world. The reason why it’s so popular is because it basically gives your entire upper body and core a great workout, especially the pectorals and triceps.

I just did 10 and I can feel myself positively glowing with health already (and panting for relief).

How to do a push up
A quality push up involves the following:
• Lie prone (on your stomach) with your hands at shoulder width (or slightly wider)
• With your body kept straight, raise yourself off the ground
• Lower until your chest is nearly touching the ground
• Repeat (until you can’t anymore)
• To keep good form, imagine a straight line running between your head and your ankles

How to Stay Healthy While Travelling

One of the challenges we face in trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, is what to do when traveling. How do we eat healthy when we’re limited to airport food and business dinners? How do we keep up our exercise routine when we’re on a plane most of the day or in meetings?

Get any recommended vaccines or preventative medication before traveling abroad. Contact your physician, or visit a travel health website, to learn if there are any recommendations for your travel destination. Common vaccines that keep travelers healthy include hepatitis and tetanus. Find out if you should take anti-malaria pills on your trip, it's advisable for travel to certain countries abroad.

Nutritionist Kelly Aronica stresses the importance of “eating healthy before you leave as an easy way to feel great at the start of your trip. You won’t want to ruin that by overeating abroad.” She suggests five to seven servings of fruit and vegetables per day, as well as healthy fats like olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados, and fatty fish, will set you straight before an adventure of any size.

Heading home, you should try to get yourself back on track as soon as possible, according to Aronica. Staying hydrated and settling back into your healthy eating habits are paramount. Eating three healthy meals per day can help you readjust to your time zone as will getting back into your regular workout routine.

Lose 20 Pounds in a Month

If you are overweight, you are putting your body under tremendous stress. Your muscles and bones have to carry the extra weight around, and your heart and digestive systems need to produce the extra energy required to do so. The fat deposits on your key organs make their functioning more difficult. The function of your immune system might be slowed down and you might be more prone to diseases.

Reduce the calorie intake: Slightly reduce the amount of calories you consume in a day. About 100 calories can be decreased from your diet. Care should be taken not to reduce high amounts of calories.

Drink Water: Water is the biggest catalyst of body metabolism which needs to be taken throughout the day.

Split your Meals: Eat five to six times a day to keep the body metabolism active.

Fiber Contents: Include fiber contents in your diet that promotes digestion and prevents constipation.

I recommend Saturdays as your “Dieters Gone Wild” day. I am allowed to eat whatever I want on Saturdays, and I go out of my way to eat ice cream, Snickers, Take 5, and all of my other vices in excess. I make myself a little sick and don’t want to look at any of it for the rest of the week. Paradoxically, dramatically spiking caloric intake in this way once per week increases fat loss by ensuring that your metabolic rate (thyroid function, etc.) doesn’t downregulate from extended caloric restriction. That’s right: eating pure crap can help you lose fat. Welcome to Utopia.

Exercise Tactics to lose 20 pounds in a month

Exercise twice a day – One 20 minutes workout in the morning and another one in the evening.

Do weights once every second day – Getting muscle will help your body burn more fat. The muscle takes a lot of calories to maintain while fat takes nearly none.

Split your cardio workouts between high and low intensity – High intensity to burn a lot of carbs off and low intensity to finish of the fat hanging around

Cardio is 20 minutes of hard cardio – Hard cardio is defined as keeping your heartrate up around 80% of your max. This will raise your metabolism for a long time 12 – 24 hours.

Walking or casual exercise can be an hour long – This is a great way to burn fat as you can exercise low impact by walking for an hour.

Weights should be basic exercises – Basic exercises are things like squats, bench presses, lunges, military presses. These exercises work a lot of muscle groups at once.

Healing between workouts is most important – Now that you are working out it is a good idea to get a lot of rest and sleep so that your body can recover. Your body only recovers when you are sleeping or at least resting.

Benefits Of Sweating In A Sauna

There is a valid reason why human beings have used sweat baths for hygienic and health purposes since the Stone Age. It's because sweating has proven its effectiveness in flushing out toxins and disease and maintaining optimal physical as well as mental health.

Many health experts consider sweating to be the best health benefits of a sauna. There is a lot more to sweating than meets the eye (or nose). It is a very complex and active process. Upon close scrutiny it is clear that sweating is essential to life and deserves to be at the top of the list of benefits of a sauna.

As we mentioned earlier, the skin is a major eliminative organ. Our modern lifestyle makes most people's skin inactive. Many of us don't sweat, especially during the winter months. Modern synthetic fibres or tight clothing that doesn't allow the skin to breathe, can damage our skin and our natural ability for elimination, as does excessive prolonged sun exposure. A sedentary lifestyle also inactivates the skin.

Our skin is exposed to hundreds of chemicals during the course of our life, and is affected by them. From innocent bath products such as shampoos, shower gels, lotions and soaps to deodorants. Household cleaning solvents, detergent residues on clothes and chemicals from the bath or shower water also affect the skin.

According to Dr. Lawrence Wilson, author of "Sauna Therapy for Detoxification and Healing," heating your body several degrees dramatically increases circulation and opens skin pores as the body begins to sweat heavily. This helps remove toxins from hard-to-reach places like bone, sinuses and teeth. Dr. Wilson also says that cells damaged by toxic metals and chemicals are weaker than normal cells, and their death can be accelerated by heating them up. This assists your body in removing any metals or chemicals that were trapped inside those damaged cells.

One Teaspoon Equals How Many Grams Sugar?

One teaspoon of granulated white sugar is equal to about 4.2 grams. There are approximately 4-8 grams of sugar in a teaspoon of sugar, depending on its granularity. If you are buying a bottle of cola with 44 grams of sugar, you would divide 44 by 4.2 which is equal to about 10 teaspoons of sugar.

So, how about tablespoon?

It depends on what you're measuring.

What's the tablespoon holding? Butter or oregano? Sugar or salt? Molten lead or feathers?

Grams are a unit of mass (or weight) and a tablespoon is a unit of volume. Therefore it depends entirely on what you are measuring -- it depends on the density of the substance. A tablespoon of lead will be much heavier than a tablespoon of feathers (although a gram of lead and a gram of feathers weigh exactly the same!). Similarly, a tablespoon of butter weighs a different number of grams than a tablespoon of salt.

See the Web Links for a handy automatic conversion calculator. Just enter the food item, the units you have, and the units you want... and presto!

For instance (for US tablespoon):
1 tablespoon of water weighs 14.79 grams
1 tablespoon of table salt weighs 18.25 grams
1 tablespoon of butter weighs 14.19 grams
1 tablespoon of oil (canola or soy) weighs 13.62 grams
1 tablespoon of sugar (granulated) weighs 12.5 grams
1 tablespoon of sugar (brown) weighs 13.8 grams (packed)

Some other useful conversions:

16 tablespoons = 1 cup

3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon

28.35 grams = 1 dry ounce

1 US tablespoon = 14.7867648 ml

Avoiding Weight Gain When You Quit Smoking

If you want to stop smoking but are worried about gaining weight, this article may help you. Many ex-smokers do gain a few pounds, but only a few gain a lot of weight. The best action you can take to improve your health is to quit smoking. Smoking is much more harmful to your health than gaining a few pounds. Making some simple changes, like developing healthier eating and physical activity habits, should help you control your weight gain when you quit smoking.

Smoking increases metabolism slightly:

* Smoking burns up to 200 calories a day in a heavy smoker
* Because smoking burns calories, metabolism is boosted (increased) slightly
* Nicotine is an appetite suppressant

When you quit smoking, a gain of between 5 and 10 pounds during the first few months of cessation is normal. If your eating habits have remained the same as they were when you smoked, you can easily shed this small gain with a brisk, 30 minute walk daily.

The fact is that many, but not all, ex-smokers do gain some weight after they quit. One study found that 60 percent of men and 51 percent of women ex-smokers put on extra pounds. But the degree of weight gain is relatively small in most cases. The average long-term weight gain for quitters is about 5 pounds, and in one study, 23 percent of quitters actually lost weight.

Smokers weigh less because smoking depresses the appetite for certain foods, while quitters, whose appetites are not suppressed, gain weight because they take in more calories. Nicotine may also alter the smoker's metabolism so that smokers burn more calories and convert fewer calories into fat. In addition, smoking serves as a meal terminator (rather than taking a second or third helping or dessert, you are likely to stop eating and have a cigarette).

Relaxation Tips That Relieve Stress

The body’s natural relaxation response is a powerful antidote to stress. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, visualization, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, and yoga can help you activate this relaxation response. When practiced regularly, these activities lead to a reduction in your everyday stress levels and a boost in your feelings of joy and serenity. What’s more, they also serve a protective quality by teaching you how to stay calm and collected in the face of life’s curveballs.

One of the best ways to deal with a stressful situation, especially if the stress is caused by something you have no control over, is to not think about it. And one of the easiest ways to get your mind off things that are bothering you is to read a good book.

You can read the latest best seller that you've been looking forward to. Or, if you don't think you will be able to concentrate on anything new, choose an old favorite that you're already familiar with.

If you're thinking meditation means twisting your body into an uncomfortable position and uttering "oohs" and "omms" for an hour, guess again. Any repetitive action can be a source of meditation, says Herbert Benson, MD, author of The Relaxation Response anddirector emeritus, Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. This includes walking, swimming, painting, knitting -- any activity that helps keep your attention calmly in the present moment.

When you catch yourself thinking about your job, your relationship or your lifelong to-do list, experts say to simply let the thought escape, and bring your mind back the repetition of the activity. Try it for just 5 to 10 minutes a day and watch stress levels drop.

Massage Therapy - Benefits of Massage

Massage is no longer available only through luxury spas and upscale health clubs. Today, massage therapy is offered in businesses, clinics, hospitals and even airports. If you've never tried massage, learn about the possible health benefits of massage and what to expect during a massage therapy session.

As you lie on the table under crisp, fresh sheets, hushed music draws you into the moment. The smell of sage fills the air and you hear the gentle sound of massage oil being warmed in your therapist's hands. The pains of age, the throbbing from your overstressed muscles, the sheer need to be touched -- all cry out for therapeutic hands to start their work. Once the session gets underway, the problems of the world fade into an oblivious 60 minutes of relief and all you can comprehend right now is not wanting it to end.

An increasing number of research studies show massage reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion, and increases endorphins (enhancing medical treatment). Although therapeutic massage does not increase muscle strength, it can stimulate weak, inactive muscles and, thus, partially compensate for the lack of exercise and inactivity resulting from illness or injury. It also can hasten and lead to a more complete recovery from exercise or injury.

In response to massage, specific physiological and chemical changes cascade throughout the body, with profound effects. Research shows that with massage:

* Arthritis sufferers note fewer aches and less stiffness and pain.
* Asthmatic children show better pulmonary function and increased peak air flow.
* Burn injury patients report reduced pain, itching, and anxiety.
* High blood pressure patients demonstrate lower diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and stress hormones.
* Premenstrual syndrome sufferers have decreased water retention and cramping.
* Preterm infants have improved weight gain.

Body Detoxification Diet

Detox, short for detoxification, is the removal of potentially toxic substances from the body. Although detox is primarily thought of as a treatment for alcohol or drug dependence, the term is also used to refer to diets, herbs, and other methods of removing environmental and dietary toxins from the body for general health.

Detox diet plans can help you lose weight, and rejuvenate your body. In a world filled with toxins detox diets are becoming ever more important. A detox diet can cleans years of toxin build up in the cells resulting in clarity of mind, health, energy and a new beginning for people who are sick. I have no doubt in my mind that long fasts have the best results in chronic ailments. But not many people have the time or inclination nor the necessary grit and commitment to undertake such a fast.

When your bodies own detox system get tired and over worked, it slows down and becomes sluggish. You start to feel tired and restless and all kinds of unexplained illnesses set in. This is when a detox with a detox diet is necessary to clean you up on the inside and give you back your health.

To cleanse the body on the inside and rid it of toxins, some plans require that you fast. You would take in no food during this part of a body detox plan and drink lots of water, at least 64 ounces each day. Lemon juice or unsweetened tea can also be used. Lemon juice has the advantage of providing nutritional support while you go through the detox.

Fresh, organic veggies and fruits also make a wonderful detox eating plan. This detox diet is an excellent diet for cleansing the body. The diet contains lots of fiber to clean the intestines and stomach of toxic, poisonous buildup.

Often the plan starts with a breakfast of fresh fruits, then veggies at mid-day and in the evening. An even quicker way to detox on this plan is to eat only raw (or very lightly cooked) fruits and vegetables. You should be certain to wash the fruit and veggies very thoroughly if you go with this plan.

Stretching Before Exercise Myths

Myth: Perform stretches before a warm up.

Fact: Though stretching should be part of warming up, the muscles must be warmed before flexibility exercises. Perform light cardiovascular exercise for 5 to 10 minutes before stretching to prepare your muscles for activity.

The best type of stretching to perform before your workout is dynamic stretching. This is stretching that involves movement of the muscles. Dynamic stretching includes arm circles, weightless walking lunges, side bends and trunk rotations.

Sports scientists have determined that stretching before you exercise could increase the chance of injury and not decrease as previously thought. Static stretching before you have thoroughly warmed up causes muscles to tighten up which is the opposite of what you want before you exercise.

Some studies have suggested that stretching actually makes muscles more susceptible to injury. They claim that by stretching, muscle fibers are lengthened and destabilized, making them less prepared for the strain of exercise. “You might want to warm-up and stretch before a run, but if you are lifting weights wait until after the workout to stretch your muscles,” Tyne suggests.

Vit B Complex Benefits

The Vitamin B Complex comprises of the essential B Vitamins - Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B9, Vitamin B12 plus the vitamins Biotin, Choline and Inositol. Vitamin B Complex is needed for the proper functioning of almost every process in the body.

The early investigations having found the substance called vitamin B were surprised to discover a whole family of these B vitamins. Actually there were more than a dozen of these vitamins, all different and performing a wide variety of functions. Most of these B complex vitamins work together for the benefit of the body. Because of the close bond between them, they were referred to as the B complex vitamins.

Cereals such as rice, wheat, and barley all contain B complex vitamins, but they are found particularly in the outer covering of the grain. This means that polished rice has lost many of these vitamins. The same is true of white flour from meat.

The benefits of vitamin B complex to the elderly include improved memory and mood. No matter what their age, most people notice an improvement in memory and ability to concentrate, as well as a decrease in depressed feelings and irritability.

Vitamin B complex is used by the body to convert carbohydrates into glucose, which is then converted by the cells into energy, commonly referred to as metabolism. The symptoms of vitamin B complex deficiency are similar to symptoms of low blood sugar levels. Increased irritability is one of the first symptoms. Those with sluggish metabolisms or problems controlling their weight often benefit from vitamin B complex supplements.

Boost Your Metabolism

Your metabolism rate is based on several factors, including age, gender, amount of muscle versus fat, and activity level.

Whether you’re trying to lose weight or just wanting to maintain your sleek physique, boosting your metabolism to a higher rate is always a good idea. There are several ways to give your metabolism an extra push — including exercising early in the day — but eating can also be a factor in its elevation.

When you're hypothyroid, fatigue, difficulty losing weight, or continued weight gain can all be attributable to a drop in the metabolism that frequently accompanies hypothyroidism. Even after your hypothyroidism is properly treated with thyroid hormone replacement, you may find that your metabolism has not bounced back to where it was before. This sluggishness in your metabolism can leave you feeling exhausted, and finding that you can't lose weight, despite a healthy low-calorie diet.

Increasing your metabolism means your body burns calories at a higher rate. So if your metabolism is high, it’s burning calories even when you aren’t working hard at the gym. A sluggish metabolism can cause you to gain weight, because you’re consuming more than your body is burning.

Here are some ways you can help revive and boost your metabolism.

1. Make sure you eat breakfast.

2. Eat the majority of your food earlier in the day.

3. Don't starve.

4. Eat smaller meals more frequently.

5. Get enough aerobic exercise.

6. Build muscle with weight training or resistance exercise.

7. Water, water, water!!

How to Stay Sharp in Your Old Days?

Want to stay mentally sharp well into old age? A new study has some advice for you: Exercise at least once a week, don’t smoke, and get a good education.

The research, published in Neurology, examined the characteristics of people who don’t lose cognitive function in their 70s and 80s. Although most research has concentrated on the many seniors who do lose cognitive ability, this study flip-flopped the typical approach and examined the traits of older people who don’t lose any mental sharpness.

Among its many benefits, exercise improves blood flow to the brain. This three-pound organ consumes about 20 percent of the oxygen and glucose you take in, and when poor circulation hampers their delivery, memory is obviously affected. Physical activity also helps control blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight. Hypertension is the number-one cause of "mini-strokes" that can lead to severe cognitive dysfunction. Diabetes before age 65 doubles the risk of Alzheimer's disease. And abdominal obesity during midlife triples the risk of dementia at age 70!

Remain mentally active. Mental exercises can stimulate blood flow to the brain and help retain more functions.
